Trader Joe’s plans to open a new market in Tigard, Oregon, the grocer announced.

The retailer has yet to set an opening date for the store but said it would open its doors this year.

“We've consulted our maps and compass and have found a terrific location for a store in Tigard, Oregon. We are proud to be joining the neighborhood. Our Crew is working hard so we can open our doors in 2022,” the company’s online announcement said.

A building permit that was issued indicated that a 25,000-square-foot space at 16200 S.W. Pacific Highway in Tigard, which was identified as a former Albertsons store, would be renovated and the new use would be a Trader Joe's location, according to Portland Business Journal.

Trader Joe’s has opened more than 500 stores across the U.S. since 1967. The Tigard location will join 10 other locations in Oregon, including Beaverton, Hillsboro, Bend, Lake Oswego, Clackamas, Medford, Corvallis, Portland, Eugene and Salem.

Tim Martin, regional vice president at Trader Joe’s, said he's excited about the grocery chain’s expansion in Oregon. “We definitely see having more stores in Oregon. We're actually very excited about that,” Martin said, according to the Portland Business Journal. “The Oregon customer is our customer. Our stores in the area are well received, and we're just really excited to be part of communities that are excited to have us.”

Although Trader Joe’s has been receiving national attention recently regarding unionization and employees’ dissatisfaction with the current pay and benefits at the company, the company said it wants its customers’ experience while shopping to be rewarding, eventful and fun.

In a Qualtrics' 2022 ranking of brands by customer trust and loyalty survey that was released in December, Trader Joe's ranked at No. 10 on the Experience Index, which was generated based on a survey of 4,000 U.S. consumers about their experiences with brands across 25 industries. Costco was the highest on the list for positive consumer experiences, claiming the top spot on Qualtrics' 2022 Experience Index. Amazon, Kroger, Publix, and Aldi rounded out the top 5 on the list.

“Crew Members take care in maintaining safe and inviting neighborhood stores; in crafting creative, informative signage to support our customers’ understanding of our products; and in creating a store environment that imparts adventure, humor, and a warm sense of community,” Trader Joe’s said.

Within the last couple of months, two Trader Joe’s stores have formed unions. In July, a Trader Joe’s in Hadley, Massachusetts, was the first store to vote to unionize, and then last month, a second store in downtown Minneapolis voted to unionize.
