With Lent and the rise in flexitarian diets in mind, Vallarta Supermarkets of Los Angeles has expanded its foodservice menu offerings to include a number of meatless alternatives. Customers can now enjoy meatless versions of their favorite dishes in various departments every weekend through April 12.

“Many of our customers give up eating meat during Lent,” Andrew Lewis, VP of marketing for Vallarta Supermarkets, said in a statement. “Now they’ll be able to enjoy their traditional favorites, like tacos, burritos, quesadillas and more, without giving up taste and still observing Lent.”

The new menu items will be available across all 50 stores and various in-store departments: La Cocina, Cevicheria, Pescaderia, Grab and Go, and the Cremeria. Beyond Meat will be offered as a protein substitute option at La Cocina at all Vallarta Supermarkets. Customers can choose the meat alternative on a variety of menu items, such as a carnitas torta or carne asada tacos.

Although launched for Lent, Beyond Meat will be available year-round for those limiting their meat consumption. It is currently available in the grocer's freezer aisle for those who prefer to cook at home.

The Pescaderia, or seafood department, regularly offers refreshing varieties of ceviche, from fish, shrimp, imitation crab and seafood mixtures. The department also offers a variety of heat-and-eat stir-fry items for customers to take home. New items can also be found at the popular Cevicheria (ceviche section), where the ceviche is made fresh daily in-store throughout the day.

Another Lent favorite, Milk Capirotada (bread pudding), will also be available on weekends (Friday through Sunday) in Vallarta’s in-house kitchen, La Cocina. Other new Cremeria items, such as shrimp cake, potato cake and seafood cake, will be available all Lent season.

Vallarta Supermarkets has also expanding its grab-and-go offerings with new items, including Stuffed Avocado Ceviche and a variety of ceviches in a cup, such as a la Diabla, Shrimp Avocado and Mango, Shrimp and Scallop and Campechana.

Vallarta Supermarkets is a full-service, independent grocery chain with 50 locations throughout California.
