Whole Foods opens new store in Washington, D.C.

The supermarket in the historic Walter Reed development sells a variety of organic, conventional and Sourced for Good produce, as well as items from local farms and ready-to-eat salads from Bowery Farming and Gotham Greens.

Whole Foods Market opened its newest store in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday in the historic Walter Reed development, featuring more than 800 locally sourced items from vendors across D.C., Virginia and Maryland.  

The 47,000-square-foot store, located at 7150 12th Street NW, features “calming colors and reflective finishes” in an homage to the former Army hospital. The new store also offers a variety of organic, conventional and Sourced for Good produce, as well as items from local farms and ready-to-eat salads from Bowery Farming and Gotham Greens.  

“We’re thrilled to open our doors in the historic Walter Reed neighborhood,” said Donovan Morris, store team leader for Whole Foods Market. “I feel privileged to help bring Whole Foods Market’s knowledgeable team members, high quality standards for food and hand-picked selection of local products to a neighborhood and community which has held a special place in my heart since childhood.” 

Whole Foods also announced at the opening day ceremony that Bethesda, Maryland-based Dress It Up Dressing is the latest recipient of its Local Producer Loan Program, which comes with a $150,000 low-interest loan to scale up their business. Through the program, Whole Foods has awarded approximately $26 million via more than 360 loans.

Other locally sourced items in the new store include: 

  • artisan crackers from FireFly Farms and pastas from La Pasta 

  • frozen desserts from Ice Cream Jubilee, granola from Oh-Mazing and pickled vegetables from Veggie*Confetti 

  • smoked salmon from Ivy City Smokehouse, Maryland crabmeat from M. Clayton Seafood Company and oysters from Rappahannock Oyster Co. 

  • chicken from Bell & Evans, turkey from Koch’s Turkey Farm and pork from Pennbrook Acres Farms

  • beer from D.C. Brau Brewing, Aslin Beer Co. and Right Proper Brewing Company

  • cookies and pies from Whisked by Jenna and cake slices from Sweet & Natural 

The grocer also announced it has made donations to local charities such as D.C. Food Project, Real Food for Kids and Food Rescue D.C. It also has donated meals through the Washington, D.C.-based Food Donation Connection.
