Landover, Md.-based Giant called the Local Produce Boxes 'a huge success' in their first summer last year.Giant Food

Giant Food has relaunched its Local Produce Boxes program after a fruitful debut last summer.

The boxes — containing locally grown, in-season fruit and vegetables — drew a strong response from customers last year and will again be available for order throughout the summer through GiantFood.com and fulfillment via the Giant Delivers service, Landover, Md.-based Giant said yesterday.

Offered without a subscription, the Local Produce Boxes retain their $20 retail price and assortment of six or more items, sourced from area farms in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. Items will vary weekly, depending on farm harvests and the produce that’s in season, according to Giant.

To get the Local Produce Boxes, shoppers place an order at GiantFood.com and receive their box via the Giant Delivers service.

“Giant’s first summer of offering the Local Produce Boxes was a huge success, and our customers loved knowing that their produce was sourced locally by the best farms around our area,” Adenike Olaleye, senior manager of e-commerce merchandising at Giant Food, said in a statement. “We’re working with more farmers this year to offer an even wider range of produce options that will keep our customers pleased week after week.”

Participating farms include Baugher’s Orchards and Houser Produce Farm in Maryland, Papen Farms and Fifer Orchards in Delaware and Kirby Farms of Virginia. Local Produce Box items will be available while supplies last.

Giant noted that customers also can save by purchasing a Giant Delivers Local Meal Bundle, a specially curated recipe in which shoppers buy all ingredients in one click and automatically save $5. And from July 8 to Sept. 8, customers can earn 400 Flexible Rewards points each time they spend at least $20 on participating local products. Points earned can be used for grocery savings at Giant stores or for gas discounts at participating Giant and Shell fuel stations.

Part of Ahold Delhaize USA, Giant Food operates 164 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia, including 152 full-service pharmacies, 92 full-service PNC Banks and 26 Starbucks locations.
