Naturipe Heat SealNaturipe Farms Peel and Reseal Fresh Blueberry Tray and Organic Blueberry Compostable Packaging have been named as finalists for the Produce Marketing Association’s 2014 Impact Awards. Launched this past spring in two convenient sizes, 18-ounce and 2-pound, the tray offers retailers and consumers product freshness, a secure easy open and close tab and a 40% reduction in plastic, say company officials; the design satisfies many consumer trends and issues including sustainability, food safety, in-store safety and convenience. “The design of our Peel and Reseal products required a complete systems approach and required adaptation of our traditional practices in order to incorporate a more sustainable consumer package,” says Janis McIntosh, marketing manager for Naturipe Farms. “Sustainable packaging is one of the key objectives of our “Cultivate with Care” program which brings focus to an array of sustainable practices that we do from field to the final customer.” Earthcycle baseThe 6-ounce, natural fiber tray is home compostable, recyclable and sealed in a breathable flow-wrap film. Launched this summer, this innovative pack protects the blueberries and creates a differentiated presentation at retail, while deeply aligning with the values of the organic consumer. “The 100% compostable material as the package base creates an emotional connection for the organic consumer as it speaks to their desire for authenticity and ‘good feeling’ about their purchases,” says McIntosh. The new compostable packaging aligns with Naturipe’s “Cultivate with Care” program and overall mission to reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink. Winners of the Impact Awards will be announced at Newark, Del.-based PMA’s annual Fresh Summit convention in October.
