Schnuck Markets, Inc. has launched a pilot program “Fresh Produce Now,” which highlights fresh, seasonal, and local items for shoppers at select Schnucks and Eatwell Markets stores in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

As part of the pilot program, a partnership with vendor Foodshed.io, when a fresh, locally grown produce item arrives from a farm to a customer’s selected “home” store, the Schnucks Rewards app will send an alert if push notifications are enabled. The message also includes the harvesting source and, when possible, when the product was harvested. The pilot program is intended both to emphasize produce for Schnucks customers, in addition to driving engagement with the Schnucks Rewards app where push notifications are activated.

“We are refining the answer to the question of ‘What is local?’” from how many miles away to how many hours ago something was picked,” said Rachel Wilson, director of farms, Foodshed.io. “Working together with Schnucks though our technology, we will not only be able to ensure a new standard of freshness but also reduce food waste.”

Founded in St. Louis in 1939, Schnuck Markets, Inc. is a third and fourth generation, family- owned grocery retailer which operates 115 stores, serving customers in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. The company has 12,000 employees.
