Sliced Ambrosia Apples Make the Cut for Supermarkets

Ambrosia apples are being released nationally in a new sliced apple package from Crunch Pak to capitalize on consumer demand. “We’re very excited about the new sliced Ambrosia available from Crunch Pak,” says Steve Lutz, vice president of marketing for CMI.  “Demand by consumers for Ambrosia surged this season so it makes perfect sense for retailers to have one more way to cash in on this spectacular apple.” “Crunch Pak is the established leader in the sliced apple category so we’re excited to see that they recognize the emerging opportunity with Ambrosia apples," says Lutz. According to Lutz, supermarket scan data results from Nielsen showed that over the most recent 26 weeks, more supermarkets added Ambrosia apples to their produce shelves than any other apple variety.  “This year alone, nearly 3,000 supermarkets added Ambrosia to their apple mix.  That’s happening because consumers are seeking out Ambrosia.” Krista Jones, director of brand development and product innovation at Crunch Pak, reports that the company is slicing Ambrosia apples for its variety-specific peel and reseal bags. “Our shoppers are apple savvy; they know what they like and they look for their favorite varieties like Ambrosia in the store,” says Jones. She adds that Crunch Pak specifically selected Ambrosia apples because of their sweet flavor and firm texture. A random selection of consumers from the Ambrosia Facebook page were sent samples of Crunch Pak’s sliced Ambrosia Apples. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with one consumer submitting a product review within hours of receiving their sample. Jan Dean from Flint, Mich., wrote, “Oh my, this is the best thing since sliced bread!  I love the resealable bag most of all.  The apple slices stay fresh and crispy!  The apples were perfect and of course, yummy! Just as perfect as a whole Ambrosia apple!"  Jan went on to say, “I would buy them again, for sure.” Another consumer, Jack Ripple, from Fort Wayne, Ind., wrote, “I received the sliced Ambrosia Apples today–they are so good! Each slice is cool, crispy and delicious–the flavor and freshness is wonderful. I also really like the easy resealable bag–that works perfectly!”
