In recognition of Knowlan’s Super Markets being named the Minnesota Grown 2016 Retailer of the Year for the fifth year in a row, the Supervalu Foundation is making a $10,000 general operating grant to the nonprofit of their choice. Knowlan’s Super Markets has been committed to supporting local farmers and food producers for more than 100 years. The Supervalu Foundation provides program-specific and general operating support for organizations in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area.

“We are thrilled to be recognized with the Supervalu Foundation award for our ongoing dedication to Minnesota food producers,” says Knowlan’s owner, president and CEO Lauri Youngquist. “Since the beginning, our mission has always been to offer our customers the freshest selection of local produce.”

Founded in 1905, Knowlan’s operates six Festival Foods stores and two Knowlan’s Fresh Foods Stores in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The family-owned-and-operated business has been selling locally grown food for more than 100 years. Knowlan’s has requested that Second Harvest Heartland, the Twin Cities’ Feeding America affiliate, receive the Supervalu Foundation grant.

“We congratulate Knowlan’s on this well-deserved recognition,” says Bill Chew, president of Supervalu’s west wholesale region. “Supporting Minnesota food producers is a top priority for Supervalu and Knowlan’s is a great example of a company that supports the local food community.”

The Retailer of the Year award is given to four retailers that excel at promoting Minnesota foods and focus on local food sources and suppliers. Knowlan’s has won the award in the retail group of nine stores or less every year since 2012.
