Unilever-ICBINB logo in a gray background | Unilever-ICBINBUnilever North America announced that it is transforming its buttery spreads portfolio. The new spreads will feature new recipes made with real, simple ingredients like a blend of plant-based oils, purified water and a pinch of salt and no artificial preservatives. The first to receive this update is I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! (ICBINB). The new ICBINB will be the first Unilever spread to be made with non-GMO sourced ingredients. The line of spreads will provide a source of good fats – monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats – similar to those found in avocados, walnuts and almonds. The transformation is a whole systems approach, says company officials, affecting how Unilever spreads are made from seed to table, including:

  • A newly renovated facility in New Century, Kan., which currently sends "zero waste" to landfill, with a commitment to be 100% powered by renewable energy by 2020; and

  • Redesigned packaging, resulting in a new, rectangular shape that is more space-efficient in the refrigerator, dishwasher safe (top rack only), reusable and recyclable where facilities exist. Following the entire portfolio transformation, officials note that the redesign will eliminate about 552,000 pounds of plastic from the waste stream per year.

This is a groundbreaking innovation for Unilever’s U.S. foods division, say officials, adding that since Unilever is the category leader with almost 60% of the spreads market share, this move will completely reshape the entire category.
