ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets here has raised the ire of some of its famously die-hard fans by choosing to shut down the Facebook page of one of its stores.
In a message posted on the site, Wegmans said it was taking the Facebook page down on Dec. 9 “because our Northborough (Mass.) store is now up and running.”
“We have enjoyed a tremendous year with you at our Northborough Facebook page,” the Wegmans post stated, suggesting that customers speak directly with employees instead of using Facebook.
“Remember, our employees are there to serve you in person. Whenever you have a problem or a question, talk directly to one of our employees. They want to hear what you’re thinking.” Wegmans also suggested that customers sign up for email newsletters or follow Wegmans on Twitter.
A Wegmans spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
In a response to some comments on the site, Wegmans said that although some locations (such as Pittsford, N.Y.) monitor their own Facebook pages, the employees at the Northborough store did not feel they had the resources to adequately do so.
In the buildup to the opening of the store, the page had accumulated nearly 7,500 fans, some of whom reacted negatively to the news:
