The 2015 National Grocers Association (NGA) Best Bagger Champion, David Tochinskiy of Rosauers Supermarket in Spokane, Was., was featured on the Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday, February 17, 2015. "Independent supermarket operators have a long tradition of providing the communities they serve with the highest quality of customer service, and great grocery bagging is one example of exemplary service that differentiates our members' stores from the competition," says Peter J. Larkin, president & CEO, NGA. "On behalf of the independent supermarket industry, NGA appreciates the opportunity to showcase the importance of great bagging techniques on a national platform and we always enjoy watching Mr. Letterman try out his bagging skills against the NGA Best Bagger Champion." The Best Bagger Competition, sponsored by PepsiCo, is a nationwide promotion for supermarket employees, which is intended to demonstrate a superior core customer service skill in a friendly competition. Contestants are judged by speed of bagging, proper bag-building technique, weight distribution in the bag, as well as style, attitude and appearance. This year, 25 finalists representing large regional food retailers as well as small local operators from across North America vied for the title of NGA Best Bagger Champion. The 29th Best Bagger Competition was held February 9, 2015, at the annual NGA trade show, located in Las Vegas, Nev. In addition to appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman and taking home "bagging rights" for the year, Tochinskiy was awarded with the $10,000 grand prize.
