Amazon Fresh opens 2nd Pennsylvania location
It’s the 43rd store for the high-tech brick-and-mortar grocery arm of the retail giant.
Amazon Fresh on Thursday opened its second store in Pennsylvania.
The market in Broomall, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles from Philadelphia, is the retailer’s first store in the state with its proprietary “just walk out” technology that allows shoppers to skip the checkout line, the company said.
The 40,000-square-foot store is the country’s 43rd Amazon Fresh location. More brick-and-mortar stores from the digital retail giant are planned in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, the company said.
Reports circulated last month that Amazon Fresh was slowing its growth in the U.K., where it has 19 stores.
An Amazon Fresh spokesperson did not confirm those reports Friday but said the retailer has no plans to put on the brakes on U.S. store growth.
“We continue to open Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S.,” the spokesperson told WGB via email. “We’ve opened over a dozen Amazon Fresh stores over the past few months, and we’re continuing to open more.”
Like other Amazon Fresh locations, the new Broomall store features national brands plus items from 365 by Whole Foods and Amazon’s private brands, Aplenty and Fresh. The store also has meat, produce and seafood departments, as well as a wide selection of prepared foods such as made-to-order pizzas, rotisserie chicken and hot sandwiches.
Prepared foods are priced to compete with restaurants, with pizza slices for $1.99 and rotisserie chickens for less than $5.
Shoppers can pay via traditional check-out lanes or they can shop and pay via a QR code in the Amazon app.
Amazon opened its first Amazon Fresh grocery store in August 2020 in Woodland Hills, California.
Earlier this month, Amazon opened its second Maryland location, a 46,000-square-foot store in Chevy Chase.
