Amazon Fresh will stay open on Thanksgiving
Even as other grocers announce plans to shutter on the holiday, the high-tech grocer from the retail giant said it would keep its doors open for last-minute Thanksgiving purchases.
Amazon Fresh is not taking a day off.
Even as other grocers announce plans to shutter on Thanksgiving Day, the high-tech grocer said Monday that its stores will remain open all day for last-minute holiday purchases. The grocer also said it will stay open on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. But it will close on Christmas Day.
Amazon Fresh has 44 stores in California, Illinois, Marylan, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Washington, Virgina and Washington, D.C.
“With the holidays around the corner, Amazon Fresh will be open throughout the holiday season to accommodate customers’ busy schedules and last-minute shopping needs,” the retailer said in a statement. “Amazon Fresh has all the groceries you need with consistently low prices, wide selection, convenient shopping and multiple payment options.”
Most Amazon Fresh stores feature what the retailer calls Just Walk Out technology in which shoppers scan a QR code to enter and are charged for purchases via their Amazon accounts, without going through the checkout aisle.
On Thanksgiving, Amazon Fresh will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for in-store shopping, with pickup and delivery windows from 6 a.m.-7 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Most Amazon-owned Whole Foods Markets will also be open on Thanksgiving, though some stores will have limited hours.
Earlier this month, Hy-Vee announced it would close on Thanksgiving for the first time in its 92-year history so its more than 80,000 employees could spend the day with family and friends. The Iowa-based grocer joins food retailers such as Walmart, Publix, Costco and Target in going dark on Thanksgiving.
“Thanksgiving Day is about gratitude,” Hy-Vee CEO and President Jeremy Gosch said in a statement. “The last several years have been some of the most challenging our employees have experienced, and this is our way of showing our appreciation for everything they do on a daily basis to serve our customers.”
