Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology, which allows shoppers to purchase items without going through a checkout, will soon begin appearing at college campuses as part of a deal with food delivery service Grubhub.

Chicago-based Grubhub and Amazon are launching the cashierless technology at Loyola University in Maryland. Students can now shop at Grubhub’s campus partner stores by scanning a QR code in the Grubhub app to enter. After gathering their purchases, the students can walk out without going through a checkout or scanning the items.

"Loyola is proud to partner with Grubhub and Amazon to bring this technology to our students," said John Coppola, vice president for finance and administration and treasurer for Loyola University Maryland, in a statement. "We strive to bring innovation to our campus, and this is a perfect example of our drive to lead in technological applications for our students, faculty and staff."

The technology was launched in 2018 with the opening of the first Amazon Go convenience store. It has since expanded to stores not owned by Amazon, such as Community Groceries in Kansas City, Missouri and QuickTrip in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Grubhub did not disclose which universities would come next, but it did reveal that it currently partners with 300 higher educational institutions and “is the only food ordering and delivery marketplace that works with campus dining programs.”

"Our installation with Amazon's Just Walk Out technology is another example of how we are strengthening our relationship with our campus partners with cost-saving technology and driving student adoption," said Eric Ferguson, chief operations officer at Grubhub, in a statement. "The services and products we provide for our campus partners are designed to enhance and improve the dining experience, and we're excited to offer this innovative and frictionless technology to our campus partners."

The Just Walk Out system is not the only retail technology Amazon is scaling beyond its own brick-and-mortar companies—Amazon Fresh, Amazon Go and Whole Foods. The retail giant is also selling its Amazon One technology, which allows Amazon Prime members to pay with a swipe of their palm across a scanner, to sports and entertainment venues, airport retailers and restaurants, among others.

Amazon announced in July that it’s now making the palm-swiping tech available at all 500-plus Whole Foods locations across the U.S.
