The 2012 class of the National Fisheries Institute’s (NFI) Future Leaders program has raised more than $15,000 for Sea Share, a charity that works with the seafood community to eradicate hunger in the U.S., and donated nearly 160,000 pounds of food. “We have a dedicated group that worked on this service project and we hope we’ve made an impact,” says class president John Roy of Bornstein Seafood. “More than just what we’ve donated or accomplished this past year it’s the relationship that the thirty companies, represented by this class, have fostered and continue to foster with Sea Share that we hope will have a lasting effect.” NFI’s Future Leaders program takes seafood professionals who are rising in their companies and exposes them to issues and opportunities across a broad range of industry interests. From food safety to lobbying the program ensures its graduates experience important parts of the industry that they might not otherwise touch. “This group didn’t just clear the bar when it comes to their service project they really redefined where that bar is,” says NFI Director of Member Relations Gerrie Thomas. “We’re talking about well over half a million meals donated, thousands of dollars on top of that and then volunteer service hours on top of that. It’s impressive.” The Future Leaders class of 2012 will wrap up their year by volunteering at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank on Monday January 28 ahead of the Global Seafood Market Conference.
