The name change accompanied an 8,000-square-foot expansion at the Eastlake, Ohio, store accommodating a new service cheese department with 60 varieties of imported, domestic and specialty cheese; expanded conventional and organic produce offerings; enhanced service meat and deli areas; and a new selection of baked goods. The store will continue to offer a mix of national brand and private label groceries at value prices, the retailer said.

“Good Cents reflects the real fresh, not real fancy experience for customers who know how to recognize a great deal on high quality products,” said Good Cents Senior Vice President John Tedesco. “Given our refreshed and expanded in-store offering, we feel that this new banner just makes more cents for our customers and the community.”

Giant Eagle introduced Good Cents in Pittsburgh late last year, touting the format as a “missing link” between conventional and discount grocery stores.

A more traditional discount format, Valu King has been operating since 2009 in Ohio. Giant Eagle said that Valu King stores in Brooklyn, Ohio and Ravenna, Ohio “will continue in the near future to operate under the current banner, as the company determines the best timing for their conversion to the Good Cents banner.”
