Hannaford Supermarkets and TOMRA of North America announced a fundraising program designed to allow customers to give back to the community when recycling. Beginning April 8, customers who recycle their deposit valued bottles and cans at Greenback Redemption Centers at participating Hannaford locations in New York will have the option to donate their 5¢ per container bottle-deposit redemption values to select local charities. The first beneficiary will be the JDRF, Northeastern New York Chapter, which will be the featured community organization through May 31. The program will be offered at 22 Hannaford stores in the greater Capital Region and Hudson Valley. “As a supermarket retailer, we are in an ideal position to raise awareness and support for worthy causes in the areas we serve,” said Hannaford Supermarkets Community Relations Specialist Molly Tarleton. “Hannaford is happy to partner with TOMRA to provide our shoppers with an easy and convenient way to support important organizations in our neighborhoods.” Customers can participate in the fundraising program in two ways. Each TOMRA reverse vending machine at participating Hannaford locations will feature a button which the customer can press after recycling deposit-valued bottles and cans to convert the bottle deposit into a donation. Customers can also drop off their recyclable cans and bottles with a Greenback staff member, who will process the containers and ensure the redemption value is donated to the designated beneficiary. “We felt this was an ideal situation to utilize our technology to not only benefit our environment, but to also benefit our community,” said President and CEO of TOMRA of North America, Inc. Harald Henriksen. “Recycling is such a positive activity, and a great way to rally the community to help address this disease and work towards a cure.” The recycling-based fundraising program at Hannaford will benefit a variety of local and regional organizations committed to health and wellness; child development and families; and hunger relief. “Each year, more than 15,000 adults and 15,000 children are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in the US. This program is a great example of how businesses and caring individuals can come together and make a difference, raising valuable funds needed for research to help those living with T1D, as well as those yet to be diagnosed,” said Executive Director of JDRF Northeastern New York Chapter Patricia M. Kenney. The donation program will be available at the following Hannaford locations throughout New York: 900 Central Avenue in Albany; 4901 State Highway in Amsterdam; 11 Trieble Avenue in Ballston Spa; 9 Clifton Country Road in Clifton Park; 96 Wolf Road in Colonie; 175 Broad Street in Glens Falls; 592 Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush; 262 Saratoga Road in Glenville; 235 Fifth Avenue Extension in Gloversville; 1165 Route 29 in Greenwich; 5239 Western Turnpike in Guilderland; 401 East Albany Street in Herkimer; 3758 Burgoyne Avenue in Hudson Falls; 1261 Ulster Avenue in Kingston; 579 Troy-Schenectady Road in Latham; 3333 Consaul Road in Niskayuna; 705 State Highway 28 in Oneonta; 1400 Altamont Avenue in Rotterdam; 85 Weibel Avenue in Saratoga Springs; 912 6th Street in Troy; 1122 Mohawk Street in Utica; and 40 Main Street in Wynantskill.
