LEWIS G. SCHAENEMAN JR.

MADISON, Conn. -- Funeral services were held here last week for Lewis G. Schaeneman Jr., former chairman and chief executive officer of Stop & Shop Supermarket Co., Quincy, Mass. Schaeneman, 67, died Oct. 10 following complications from surgery. He is survived by his wife, Priscilla; five children, two grandchildren and a brother. Schaeneman was instrumental in developing Stop & Shop's first superstore, which was an early model -- and an ongoing, successful one -- for the industry. The first prototype combined expanded perishables and grocery lines with full-service departments to create a one-stop shopping environment. Schaeneman joined Stop & Shop in 1966 as a produce-operations specialist and produce buyer. He was named assistant to the vice president and general sales manager in 1968, and a year later became general sales manager for the chain's Connecticut division. William J. Grize, president and CEO of Stop & Shop, called Schaeneman "a remarkable man of great vision [who] possessed a unique way of motivating all those who came in contact with him."
