BUENA PARK, Calif. -- The southern California division of Lucky Stores here has earned $112,000 in incentive credits from Southern California Edison for installing energy-saving equipment in 29 supermarkets.
The credits are the result of an effort by Lucky to upgrade and install energy-saving equipment, including energy management systems and variable-speed drives that allow the retailer to operate all its refrigerated cases, heating, air conditioning and motors at optimum efficiency.
As a result of the upgrades, an Edison spokesman said, Lucky will save nearly 8 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year, for an annual savings of $250,000.
The spokesman said Lucky is also developing performance specifications for future projects designed to make the stores' energy consumption 5% more efficient than it would be without environmental controls.
