The rapidly growing smokeless tobacco category figures to generate much excitement at the NACS Show. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first-ever drive-up gas station,  according to NACS, the National Association of Convenience Stores. NJ_KING_TB logo in a gray background | NJ_KING_TBGulf Refining Co. opened the station in Pittsburgh in 1913 to sell fuels and other related products. On its first day, the Gulf station sold 30 gallons of gasoline at 27 cents per gallon. Much has changed, and not just the price of gas. According to the Alexandria, Va.-based NACS, as of December 31, 2012, there were 149,220 convenience stores in the U.S., and these stores sell much more than fuel. Attendees of the upcoming NACS show will see many of the newest products available for sale in these stores. This year the NACS show takes place October 12 to 15 in Atlanta at the Georgia World Congress Center. Among the new products will be OTP (other tobacco products), including the fast-growing segment of battery powered electronic cigarettes. E-cigarettes, or e-cigs, have seen so much growth over the past few years that Well Fargo Securities calls them “more than just a fad.” In its 2012 Tobacco Talk research, the securities firm surveyed 30,000 retailers and wholesalers about e-cigarettes, and found that the trade views e-cigs as a positive opportunity. “We think e-cigs are to tobacco what energy drinks are to beverages,” wrote Bonnie Herzog, senior analyst. “Similar to energy drinks, e-cigs are profitable, growing quickly and gaining shelf space and consumer acceptance; therefore e-cigarettes are an important new niche category for retailers.” More recently, the investment bank Citigroup released a report naming the top 10 disruptive technologies. Among them: e-cigarettes, which Citi reported will have 50% compound annual growth rate over the next few years, depending on whether regulations change and how much penetration the new products have into retail. The regulation part of that is important because so far, electronic cigarettes have not been regulated the same way as traditional cigarettes. E-cigs emit water vapor instead of smoke and contain lower amounts of nicotine than combustible cigarettes. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the FDA Center for Tobacco Products currently regulates cigarettes, cigarette tobacco, roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco. The FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research regulates e-cigarettes that are marketed for therapeutic purposes. Most e-cigs are not marketed as therapeutic. Instead, they are advertised as a tobacco experience that adults can enjoy at work, in restaurants and in other places where cigarette use is banned. The FDA says that it intends to “issue a proposed rule that would extend FDA’s tobacco product authorities to products that meet the statutory definition of ‘tobacco product.’” The agency has not announced a timeline, but in August the Wall Street Journal reported that the FDA has been discussing, with the e-cigarettes industry, an online sales ban and other regulations. Still, e-cigarettes are generating excitement in retail, and many representatives will showcase their new products at the NACS show. The NACS show will also have representatives from other tobacco and non-tobacco companies, as many adult shoppers prefer a more traditional chewing or smoking experience. Here is a roundup of what attendees can expect to see this year: Smokey Mountain Chew Booth # 7511 Smokey Mountain Chew offers tobacco-free smokeless products to help adults quit or reduce their tobacco consumption. Tobacco-free snuff is a small but growing category, according to officials at the Sandy Hook, Conn.-based company.
