IMG_5001 logo in a gray background | IMG_5001November is National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month (not to be confused with National Peanut Month, or the eight peanut holidays scattered throughout the year). Since I definitely contribute to the $800 million dollars per year that Americans spend on peanut butter annually, I decided to celebrate by putting together a list of fun facts about the peanut’s biggest by-product.

  1. Peanut butter is not made from nuts: This is sort of a trick statement; peanuts are not technically nuts, they’re legumes. In order to qualify as a nut, peanuts would need to be grown on trees and peanuts grow underground. Advertisers everywhere are just happy it’s not called pealegume butter.

  2. You know that recurring nightmare, the one where you have peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth? Nope, me neither, but that is (apparently) a real fear and the term for it is Arachibutyrphobia. Sounds like the person who came up with the name might’ve had a mouth full of peanut butter when they said it.

  3. Americans are big fans of peanut butter - they eat 3 pounds of the stuff per person every year, which is enough peanut butter to coat the floor of the Grand Canyon.

  4. The Cream[y] Team: According to the National Peanut Board's website 60% of consumers prefer creamy peanut butter to it’s chunky counterpart. And, as if the East Coast/West Coast rivalry weren’t heated enough, East Coasters reportedly prefer creamy peanut butter whereas West Coasters prefer crunchy (insert your granola jokes here, fellow East Coasters).

  5. Fishing for more uses for peanut butter? Eliminate the odor in your kitchen after frying fish in your kitchen by dropping a dollop of peanut butter into the pan. Some sources say you need to have it in the pan with the fish, others claim is works just as well if you throw it in right after, I’m partial to the latter, lest you wind up with peanut butter flavored fish.

What is your favorite kind of peanut butter? How do you like to eat it?
