Rite Aid adds more store closings to the list

The number of Rite Aid stores closing due to the retailer’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy remains fluid as more were added to the list on Monday, reports WZZM-TV.

Documents show 27 more locations will be shut down in the Midwest — 12 in Michigan and 15 in Ohio.

Originally, the Camp Hill, Pa.-based company said it was going to close 154 stores with Pennsylvania and California losing the most. But the list has grown as over 200 additional closures have been reported since November 2023.

In late March, Rite Aid received the go-ahead from a U.S. judge to begin voting on a bankruptcy restructuring plan that would turn over most of the company’s equity to its bondholders, while keeping the possibility of a sale on the table.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Michael Kaplan said the bankruptcy case needed to move quickly to avoid further restructuring costs that could push the company into liquidation.

Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy in October, in the midst of facing $3.3 billion in debt.

Rite Aid had 1,687 locations as of May 14, according to ScrapeHero.
