Save A Lot Names Trey Johnson as Chief Merchandising Officer

Discount grocer continues executive changes following appointment of Leon Bergmann as CEO in February. St. Louis, Mo.-based discount grocer has appointed Trey Johnson as its new chief merchandising officer, who will report directly to CEO Leon Bergmann.

Save A Lot made news in February when it named Leon Bergmann as its new CEO. On April 13, the St. Louis, Mo.-based discount grocer announced it has appointed Trey Johnson as chief merchandising officer, reporting directly to Bergmann.

“With his strong track record of success in the grocery business, Trey brings a deep knowledge and understanding of the complex operations involved with merchandising strategies and tactical implementation,” Bergmann said in a statement. “We’re excited for him to leverage that experience to ensure that Save A Lot’s assortment positions our retail partners to win consistently in their markets.”

In his new role, Johnson will oversee all areas of merchandising and quality assurance and will work to strengthen existing relationships with retail partners and vendors, the discount grocer stated.

With more than 30 years of experience in business operations, merchandising strategy and supply chains, Johnson joins Save A Lot having previously worked with retail leaders including Albertsons, Big Lots, Family Dollar, SuperValu and Walmart. He most recently was EVP and chief merchandising, marketing and supply-chain officer for The Save Mart Cos. In that position, Johnson led multiple merchandising and supply-chain teams as they developed new formats and implemented other branding and merchandising initiatives.

"Save A Lot’s commitment to remaining a hometown grocer while maintaining quality and value for families is one I’m excited to help build upon.”

Save A Lot in December completed a relicensing program and its transition to a pure-play wholesale model. This follows the sale of corporate-operated locations to retail partners, who will continue to operate the stores under the Save A Lot brand.
