Tim Smucker and Danny Wegman Honored with GS1 Lifetime Achievement Awards

GS1 has honored Tim Smucker, chairman of the board, The J. M. Smucker Company, and Danny Wegman, CEO, Wegmans Food Markets, with GS1 Lifetime Achievement Awards yesterday at the GS1 General Assembly and Global Leadership Summit, held May 20-23 in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Smucker and Mr. Wegman were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the advancement and adoption of GS1 Standards - the most broadly used supply chain standards globally. “The leadership, vision, and innovation demonstrated by both Tim Smucker and Danny Wegman have not only advanced the food and beverage industries, but all industries that use information standards to improve business processes, share information efficiently, and conduct business one way around the world,” said Bob Carpenter, president and CEO of GS1 US. “As visionaries, they have elevated their family businesses to become two of the world’s most respected brands, while also generously giving their time to lead collaboration with their peers and trading partners to move industry forward. We couldn’t have two more deserving honorees for our first-ever GS1 Lifetime Achievement Award.” The great-grandson of company founder J.M. (Jerome Monroe) Smucker, Tim Smucker has been chairman of The J.M. Smucker Company since 1987, previously serving as the company’s co-chief executive officer, president, and chief operating office. Under Tim Smucker’s leadership, The J.M. Smucker Company achieved growth beyond jams and jelly products to include Jif, Pillsbury, and Folgers brands. A former member of the GS1 US Board of Governors, Mr. Smucker currently serves as vice chairman and chairman emeritus for the GS1 Management Board, continuing his 40-year effort to drive supply chain innovation and advocate for more widespread adoption of GS1 Standards, most recently in the area of financial services. Mr. Smucker has worked tirelessly with the Grocery Manufacturers Association for decades, serving on its Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Board Committee on Health and Wellness. He also serves on the boards of Hallmark Cards, Inc. and The Ohio State University. Mr. Wegman joined his family business, Wegmans Food Markets, in 1964, becoming CEO in 2005 after serving as president for nearly 30 years. With Mr. Wegman at the helm, the company reported 2012 annual sales of $6.6 billion and has been recognized by Fortune Magazine as one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” since 1998. A former chairman of the GS1 US Board of Governors as well as the GS1 Management Board, Mr. Wegman has been a strong advocate of GS1 Standards and data synchronization, leading industry forward by fostering collaboration between manufacturers and retailers, and more recently between healthcare providers using electronic health records and GS1 Standards for products. Mr. Wegman is also an active member and former chair of the Food Marketing Institute, and serves as trustee of the University of Rochester and a director of the Rochester Business-Education Alliance.
