ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets is taking to Twitter to help shoppers plan their Thanksgiving feast.

Wegmans executive chef Mark Makovec is responding to questions tweeted with the hashtag #turkey911. The service began on Monday and ends Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Inquiries range from questions about which wines pair well with turkey (Wegmans suggests MacMurray Chardonnay for white or Estancia Meritage or Beaujolais Nouveau for red) to the optimal temperature for preparing a heritage turkey.

Alternate cooking methods are a point of interest for tweeters who plan to bypass oven roasting. One consumer asked about the best brine to use on a turkey he intended to smoke in a barbecue pit, while another had questions about preparing the bird in a deep fryer.

While Wegmans is helping harried shoppers via social media, others are offering telephone assistance. This week, chefs from ShopRite’s Culinary Workshop are manning phones until Thanksgiving day at 2 p.m.
