What the Shuck??
January 1, 2018
I was in Wegman’s this weekend buying food for a barbecue. The barbecue was a last minutes idea so naturally I was in a bit of a rush. Obviously no barbecue is complete without corn. Now I don’t mind shucking my own corn, I actually kind if enjoy it, however as I was in a rush, I thought, “just get the pre-shucked pre-wrapped option, get out of here and fire up the grill.” When I picked up the prepackaged corn—which are exactly the same as the unshucked ones on the table—you could've knocked me over with a corn kernel. The shuck yourself corn was 3 for a dollar, pre-shucked, 5 for $6. I'm no mathematician, but I do know that is an incredibly big mark up. I decided it was work the extra few minutes to shuck my own. As I was shucking I struck up a conversation with the woman next to me. As we were shucking, I was further astonished when she told me she too was going to buy the prepackaged then thought better, however she asked a store associate where they were before hand and he told her they can’t shuck and wrap the corn fast enough. Coulda knocked me down with a kernel again. I guess the point is, don't underestimate the value of convenience. My new friend and I may have decided to shuck ourselves, but apparently there are plenty of people out there willing to pay for a good shucking.
