Big Y Foods begins rollout of mobile checkout
MyExpress Checkout Scan & Go service slated for 29 stores
September 2, 2021
Big Y Foods has launched mobile checkout in about a quarter of its stores with digital shopping specialist FutureProof Retail (FPR).
Called myExpress Checkout Scan & Go, the service enables Big Y shoppers to use their smartphone to scan products with the myExpress Checkout app, bag their items and pay via the app to complete their purchase, skipping the checkout line. They also can view specials and redeem myBigY rewards program offers and digital coupons as they shop.
Currently, myExpress Checkout is offered at 19 Big Y stores, and the Springfield, Mass.-based regional grocer soon plans to roll out the service to another 10 locations, FPR said yesterday.
“FPR provided full, real-time integration with Big Y’s NCR POS and loyalty systems,” Di Di Chan, president of New York-based FutureProof Retail, said in a statement. “We are excited Big ‘s customers love the myExpress Checkout app. We have seen a 4.9 rating in the [Apple] App Store and strong adoption growth from day one.”
Overall, Big Y Foods operates 85 stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut, including 71 Big Y World Class Market supermarkets, one Fresh Acres Market grocery store, one Table & Vine Fine Wines & Liquors store, and 12 Big Y Express fuel and convenience locations.
The addition of mobile checkout marks the latest digital service launch from Big Y. In July, the retailer expanded its myPicks Online Ordering pickup and delivery service to another nine supermarkets in the greater Springfield area, including stores in East Longmeadow, Longmeadow, Ludlow, South Hadley, Cooley Street Springfield, Westfield, Westfield Shops, West Springfield and Wilbraham. MyPicks online grocery service made its debut in April at the Big Y World Class Market store in Chicopee. The program is powered by a 12,000-square-foot, automated micro-fulfillment center (MFC) built by partner Takeoff Technologies.
Also in July, digital health provider Bonum Health announced a partnership with Big Y to offer telemedicine services to patients of the grocer’s in-store pharmacy and wellness centers. The deal gives Big Y pharmacy patients direct access to doctors and other health care providers via the Bonum Health mobile app and website.
