Shoppers who receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have a lot more options for online orders, due to an upgrade from delivery service DoorDash.

The company announced Wednesday that it is accepting SNAP/EBT payments for a number of grocers and other partners, including Aldi, Albertsons, Safeway, Meijer and select 7-Eleven locations.

The announcement comes as part of a major upgrade to the DoorDash app, which includes a universal search function that enables shoppers to find items across its numerous retail partners, a grocery tab for easier navigation of online supermarkets and the ability to simultaneously create multiple shopping carts within the app.

SNAP recipients will also receive a two-month free membership to DashPass, the company’s premium membership program that comes with benefits such as free delivery for eligible orders.

Under the new program, SNAP recipients can add their card information to the app’s “Program Cards” payment method section, and they will receive an email with a link to redeem their free DashPass membership.

“The rise of on-demand grocery delivery has had a transformational impact on food access. This is especially true for vulnerable populations, including seniors, people living in food deserts, and those facing disability or transportation barriers,” said Fuad Hannon, vice president of New Verticals at DoorDash, in a statement. “We’re proud to partner with these merchants to offer SNAP recipients access to quality groceries conveniently through our platform. Through the power of local delivery, enabling SNAP/EBT payments can make a profound impact on reducing food insecurity and connecting people to groceries and the essential items they need.”

The update is DoorDash’s most recent effort to establish itself as a delivery service for grocery stores as well as restaurants. The company launched its grocery delivery service in 2020 and has since added more than 100,000 non-restaurant stores to its roster.

The company noted in its announcement that due to the expansion, more than 98% of its monthly customers now have access to non-restaurant shops. That includes partnerships with grocers such as Albertsons Cos. banner stores, Walgreens, BJ’s, Grocery Outlet, Dollar General and more, the company noted.

"With more than 4,000 stores accepting SNAP/EBT payments on DoorDash, we are proud to help broaden food access to more than 2.3 million people who are living in USDA-defined food deserts and over 4.3 million people living in communities where over one in 10 households receive SNAP/EBT benefits …" the company stated.

SNAP/EBT recipients can begin accessing SNAP-eligible products from Aldi, Meijer and 7-Eleven on Saturday. Albertsons and Safeway customers can also link their Safeway for U and Albertsons for U loyalty rewards cards to the DoorDash app and earn points for purchases at participating locations.

DoorDash has made a number of efforts over the last six months to establish itself as a grocery delivery service. In February, the company added Aldi to its lineup of retailers, and in March it released its own branded credit card in partnership with JPMorgan Chase. DoorDash Chief Business Officer Keith Yandell said at the announcement that many of its customers were still unaware that the app could be used for non-restaurant retailers.

DoorDash also ran a television ad during the 2023 Superbowl titled “We get groceries,” featuring Matty Matheson of the Hulu series “The Bear,” Raekwon The Chef of hip-hop group The Wu-Tang Clan.
