WASHINGTON — Harris Teeter became the latest food retailer to join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership, which was officially launched last week in a ceremony at EPA headquarters here.

The other retail participants in the program are Food Lion, Hannaford Bros., Giant Eagle, Publix Super Markets and Whole Foods Market. Hill Phoenix, Kysor/Warren, DuPont and Honeywell are the other participants. The companies were all recognized as “founding partners” of the initiative at the ceremony.

The voluntary program has been under way informally for over a year, but got its official send-off last week. It aims to reduce refrigerant emissions and promote the use of non-ozone-depleting refrigerants and new refrigeration technology. The EPA is seeking broad participation from the supermarket industry in the program. (See, “EPA Hopes Launch of GreenChill Will Draw New Retailers,” SN, Nov. 19.)

“We look forward to participating with our peers and manufacturers in this endeavor,” said Michal Shepard, Harris Teeter's director of energy and maintenance, at the EPA ceremony.
