Upstart online grocer Martie announced Friday that it has expanded its footprint to 22 new states, bringing the burgeoning company’s reach to 34 states total.

The online grocer, which sells heavily discounted surplus groceries, opened a 38,000-square-foot shipping warehouse in Dallas in April to facilitate the expansion. At the time, the retailer's goods were only available in 11 states. The company said it aims to be available in all 50 states by the end of the year.

“We are thrilled to introduce Martie to more states. We have remained very strategic with our growth, ensuring that we are seeing positive unit economics and contribution margin before any expansion,” said Martie CEO and co-founder Louise Fritjofsson. “This new development means that after just 20 months in market, our business is ready to expand. Our shipping and unique sourcing strategy is a big key to our success, and we look forward to bringing these deals to millions more Americans.”

Martie sells items at discounts of up to 70% off and averts millions of items from landfills, according to the retailer.

As of April, the company operated in Texas, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. That expanded to eight more states by June—Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma—and 14 more by July— Illinois, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Products sold on Martie are typically available at higher discounts due to overstocks or changes to the packaging or seasonality. They include consumer-packaged goods, cooking items and household products. No subscription or membership is required. CPGs available on the website include brand-name pastas, pasta sauces, rice, beans, coffees, teas, cooking oils and snacks, among others.

The company, which launched in 2021, said 47% of its customers are repeat shoppers and they save an average of $54 per order. Martie offers some 800-plus SKUs and has developed partnerships with national brands like Kellogg’s, Quaker, Tate’s and Annie’s Homegrown, the company said.

The retailer has diverted 1.5 million pounds of food from landfills and saved shoppers more than $2.5 million in discounts, the company stated.
