Brookshire Grocery extends COVID-19 daily discounts

Seniors, critical/emergency workers get 5% off through July 7

Brookshire Grocery Co. plans to continue daily discount programs for seniors, health care workers and emergency personnel until July 7.

The Tyler, Texas-based regional grocer said the 5% discounts have been offered for more than nine weeks and have saved these shoppers more than $7.1 million. The savings is available across all four of the retailer’s banners: Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market and Fresh by Brookshire’s.

“We are grateful to be able to continue to give back to those who are serving on the front lines as well as those who are at high risk,” Brad Brookshire, chairman and CEO of Brookshire Grocery, said in a statement. “As we deal with this pandemic, we will continue to give back to our customers and communities. BGC is committed to making a difference in the communities we serve.”

The 5% daily discount for seniors, which began March 18, is available upon request to customers age 60 or older with valid ID. Brookshire’s noted that it’s still also urging shoppers to allow any senior customers to move to the front of the checkout line throughout the day.

Starting April 3, Brookshire’s offered a 5% daily discount on store-brand products to critical and emergency service workers. Those eligible include first responders (EMS, fire department and law enforcement officers), hospital staff and active-duty military (including National Guard and military reserve). To receive the discount at checkout, the shoppers must present active first responder, hospital or military identification or a name badge.

The discount applies to Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods and Spring Market branded products, along with Goldenbrook, Pure Harmony, Top Care, Simply Done, Paws, Tippy Toes, Full Circle, CharKing, Wide Awake Coffee Co., Over the Top, That’s Smart and Culinary Tours.

Brookshire’s, too, continues to encourage customers to honor the first two store hours each day as reserved for seniors and critical and emergency service providers.

In addition, the retailer said it has waived fees for all customers on curbside pickup for online grocery orders, where available, to help people depending on the service.

Overall, Brookshire’s has invested $13.5 million on its employees during the pandemic through bonus checks, temporary wage increases for workers in retail and logistics, retail incentives, an extra employee discount, on-site meals, and a compensation plan for those directly affected by COVID-19. The company also has enhanced benefits to include a temporary waiver of co-payments for medical services delivered via MDLive. Last month, the grocer’s more than 15,000 active employees received gift cards, with full-timers getting a $100 Brookshire’s gift card and part-timers a $50 Brookshire’s gift card, for a total of $1.3 million.
