It’s all about the nostalgia and DIY

A stronger shopper focus on local sourcing, value-based purchasing, and store brands are among the key trends that will impact the grocery sector in 2023, forecasts online grocery delivery service provider FreshDirect.
 
In its annual list of up-and-coming products, ingredients and influences, the Bronx, N.Y.-based operator, which services the greater New York tri-state area, said that 2023 will “usher in a new year of online grocery trends that underscores the ever-growing need for convenience, value, and most of all, the best in fresh quality.” 

An expert team of food, wine and spirit experts developed the list, the company said.

“Led by our best-in-class merchant team, FreshDirect is consistently on the pulse of what’s trending and what’s to come in the online grocery marketplace,” Scott Crawford, FreshDirect chief merchandising officer, said in a statement. 

“Our extensive and long-standing relationships with farmers, fishermen, artisans and producers, combined with our proprietary data systems, enable us to determine the next wave of industry innovation and the latest in customer interests and needs.”

And the trends are:

  1. Just do it…yourself: The kitchen is taking center stage in the do-it-yourself (DIY) space as more shoppers seek to enhance at-home food presentation,  FreshDirect said, adding that social media is increasing the popularity of DIY items. That includes butter boards and artistically decorated breakfast and dessert boards. “Folks are returning to hosting parties and larger gatherings again, and they want to impress their friends with easy-to-assemble items and cocktails that look just as good as they taste,” the company said  

  2. A nod to nostalgia: Demand is set to increase for products that were welcomed by shoppers when they were younger, such as Ring Dings, Yodels, mini powdered donuts, coffee cakes and retro cocktails treats, FreshDirect said, noting that “what’s old is new again” 

  3. Loyalty to local: The purchasing of locally sourced products will be popular as more consumers feel connected to their food, FreshDirect said. “Supporting local economies, better freshness/longer shelf-life and discovering unique products with regional flair and flavor, are just some of the reasons why consumers prefer to buy local,” the operator said

  4. The conscious and caring consumer: Shoppers want more transparency and will have a greater interest in buying from brands that are more values-based or mission-driven, FreshDirect said, which includes purchasing products that were developed in a sustainable manner

  5. Lots of love for private label: Value- and quality-seeking customers will continue to embrace store brands in both the shelf-stable and fresh categories, FreshDirect said
