Big Y has broken ground on a 232,000-square-foot expansion of its current 189,000-square-foot distribution center next to its corporate headquarters in Springfield, Mass. Doubling the size of the facility will support the retailer’s growth for the next 20 years, according to Big Y’s Facebook post.

“This will make us that much more efficient, and we think we can accommodate another 20 or 30 so supermarkets,” said Big Y President and CEO Charles D’Amour in a local news report. Part of the new efficiencies include state-of-the-art refrigeration systems that will allow storage of more fresh foods from local producers.

“We know, the more local the better. The opportunity to localize that with local farmers and local producers is terrific. I think it helps the overall region,” said D’Amour in another local news report.

The $40 million project will add 30 more receiving bays to the facility and support 32 new jobs.
