Meijer has begun offering customers a $10 coupon when they get a full COVID-19 vaccination at one of its stores.
Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer said Wednesday that shoppers receive the coupon, for $10 off any purchase, when they’re administered their final coronavirus shot at a Meijer pharmacy. Both the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna COVID vaccines require two shots, while the Johnson & Johnson vaccine involves just one injection.
In addition, the supercenter retailer is offering a separate coupon for $10 off a purchase of $50 or more for customers who previously completed their vaccines with any provider, including Meijer. Those shoppers can get the $10-off-$50 coupon by visiting their local Meijer pharmacy and showing their completed COVID vaccination card.
Meijer also has been giving a $100 bonus to employees who complete the COVID-19 immunization process and show their vaccine cards.
“We encourage everyone who is able to receive the vaccine to take this important step and get vaccinated,” Meijer President and CEO Rick Keyes (left) said in a statement. “When the vaccine rollout began, our pharmacy teams dedicated themselves to keeping our communities safe. Their efforts have paid off, but we’re not done yet. We’re hopeful this incentive helps tip the balance.”
Late last month, Meijer pharmacies began providing COVID vaccinations on a walk-in basis chainwide after passing the 1 million mark in doses administered at its in-store clinics. The retailer said that, to date, it has administered more than 1.3 million doses.
All eligible individuals, including those ages 12 to 17 with a parent or guardian, can get a COVID vaccination at a Meijer pharmacy. As supplies have increased, Meijer said it’s also offering vaccines on a walk-up basis at all pharmacies using the Pfizer vaccine. Every Meijer store will have a minimum of 100 doses per week for customers to get the vaccine without an appointment. Doses will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.
A Federal Retail Pharmacy Program partner for Michigan, Meijer its COVID vaccine clinics in mid-January. Since then, the retailer has conducted thousands of in-store vaccine clinics, as well as community-based off-site clinics, across all six states in its Midwestern market. Coronavirus shots became available at all Meijer stores in late March.
Although a limited number of vaccines will be available on a walk-in basis at stores, people interested in getting vaccinated can still register online for an appointment by texting “COVID” to the number 75049 or signing up at clinic.meijer.com, Meijer said. Overall, the chain operates 259 supercenters and grocery stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
Through the morning of May 19, 47.9% of the U.S. population had received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, with 37.8% fully immunized, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data. Among adults, 60.2% had received at least one dose, with 47.9% fully vaccinated. Overall, 277.3 million of the 349.2 million vaccines delivered by manufacturers had been administered.
