Two grocery chains recently made commitments to work towards sourcing 100 percent cage-free eggs by 2026.

Publix announced on its website that it has been working with egg suppliers, industry leaders, governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations to work on converting to exclusively cage-free eggs within the time frame while keeping eggs affordable for its customers. The retailer currently provides seven varieties of cage-free eggs, according to the statement.

"We appreciate the trust our customers place in us to do the right thing and will continue to work to provide our customers with quality products and a variety of choices, while ensuring food safety and animal welfare," company officials wrote. "We are committed to moving forward with this challenging and complex effort and will work toward being 100 percent cage free by 2026."

Mi Pueblo, a San Jose-based Hispanic grocery chain in Northern California, is also planning on going completely cage-free by 2026.

“Our customers asked, and we listened. We are committed to working closely with our vendors and partners to provide our customers with quality products at affordable prices while ensuring  the welfare and humane treatment of animals,” says Javier Ramirez, CEO and president of Mi Pueblo.
