WESTBURY, N.Y. - Wal-Mart Stores, Bentonville, Ark., has halted the development of a Sam's Club and Wal-Mart store here on Long Island.

Company spokesman Trey Baker said construction costs for the combination site were "just too high, so we canceled the project."

The Westbury retail-whotesale center was originally slated to open this past fall, but the property's owners, Evans and Hughes Realty, delayed the opening until summer 1994 by requesting an extension on the deadline to seek a building permit this past June.

Observers blamed the delay on high construction bids, as well as Evans and Hughes' inability to obtain the investors necessary to satisfy the $100 million debt incurred in the 1984 site purchase.

Evans and Hughes could not be reached for comment.

Wal-Mart , which already has a Sam's Club in Medford, N.Y., continues to pursue other Long Island locations for Wal-Mart stores.
