ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans here launched a marketing campaign yesterday that highlights its prices now, as compared to prices one year ago.
For the next few weeks, weekly print ads will make the price comparison, and signs on shelves will point out key items that are priced lower now than they were last year, according to the retailer.
Last November Wegmans announced it would lower hundreds of prices on frequently purchased products.
"At the time of these 2008 price cuts, Wegmans still faced very high costs for ingredients and fuel," according to Wegmans. "Like the rest of the food industry, the company struck contracts earlier that year to lock in prices at a time when they were rising rapidly, and they had to honor those contracts until they expired in 2009." Many of the prices that were lowered lasts year, have declined even further, according to Wegmans.
Average retail prices for poultry, for instance, are down 7%; pork, 26%; and beef, 17%; cheese, 11%; milk, 26%; and packaged bread, 20%, according to the retailer.
