Amazon Fresh to open new store in suburban Chicago
The online retail giant also plans stores in Virginia and Maryland
It’s a big week for online retail giant Amazon, but while much of the attention is focused on their Amazon Prime Day sale on July 16-17, the company continues to quietly open new Amazon Fresh grocery stores across the country.
The most recent in Amazon’s brick-and-mortar storefront effort is set to take place in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights on July 25, where a 50,000-square-foot Amazon Fresh store will join nine other stores in metro Chicago, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The new store follows the recent opening of an Amazon Fresh location in Eatontown, N.J., in late June, and news organizations report that additional stores are set to open in Gaithersburg, Md., and Alexandria, Va.
The openings come after a string of negative headlines last year for the company across the country after Amazon announced plans to open dozens of stores across the U.S. last year and then never moved forward with the plans.
The failure to open stores resulted in lawsuits against the company in some cases, including one in New Jersey that sought $10 million in damages for failure to open.
