Bashas’ Family of Stores, the parent company of Bashas’ Supermarkets, has committed to being 100 percent cage-free in all of its grocery store formats it operates by 2025, as long as supply permits.

Bashas’ Supermarkets will transition all of its private-label, Bashas’-branded eggs to cage-free eggs this November. The change will mark the first mainstream grocer in the state to make the transition with its own brand of eggs, say company officials.

“We are committed to being a good corporate citizen,” says Edward “Trey” Basha, CEO of Bashas’. “It’s important to us to offer local, responsibly-sourced foods at affordable prices. Bringing cage-free eggs to our customers is the right thing to do, and we are happy to be partnering with another local, family-owned business to make this happen.”

Bashas’ is teaming up with Arizona-based Hickman’s Family Farms to source its Bashas’-branded eggs.

“We are especially proud to be making this momentous transition with one of our longest-standing customers,” says Glenn Hickman, CEO of Hickman’s Family Farms, which recently announced a major cage-free expansion at its facilities in Buckeye, Ariz. “Supporting the cage-free movement means not only a high-quality egg production, but greater comfort for our hens.”

Bashas’ Supermarkets cage-free egg changeover is expected to be fully complete in 2017.

“Customers want more food traceability; they want to know exactly where their food is coming from,” Basha says. “We have a longstanding reputation as a company that cares about the community, and we’re always looking for new ways to better serve our customers.”
