SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Big Y Foods announced the completion of a solar array at its store support center here that is expected yield 750,000 kilowatt hours, offsetting the company's electrical consumption by 15% at its corporate offices and distribution center.

Real Goods Solar Energy, Western Mass Electric Company, and local contractors such as Cotton Tree Service and L&D Construction, installed the panels over the past five months. The array spreads across three acres and includes 2,178 solar panels.
Big Y previously installed rooftop solar arrays at two stores, in Lee and Franklin, Mass., which have been helping to offset electrical consumption since June 2012.
