Smaller footprints, Asian-inspired, and stores armed with cashierless tech were some of the highlights

Grocery stores come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. In 2024, several unique formats opened for the first time, and at least one reopened. Ethnic grocery stores saw a surge. Save A Lot partnered with Leevers Supermarkets to launch a Hispanic grocery store called Ahorra Mucho, while Kroger announced plans to test “Asian Experience” stores in North Texas. Canadian grocer Loblaw introduced its Asian-format store, T&T Supermarket, in Washington. Convenience and low-cost grocery stores also gained traction. Aldi tested cashierless technology, called Aldi Go, though it remains unclear which direction the discount grocer will take after its tech partner, Grabango, went out of business. Whole Foods also opened several smaller footprint stores.
