Trader Joe's to open 12 new stores, following 13 in December
The Supermarket News Store map shows dollar stores dominated again in December
Trader Joe’s took an unexpected spotlight in December’s Supermarket News monthly store map, opening 13 locations across the U.S., and the expansion doesn’t stop there for small-format grocery chain—the grocer’s website says a dozen more are opening soon.
The rapid number of store openings in December comes close to rivaling that of its sister chain Aldi, which opened 22 locations for the month, according to Scrapehero.com.
For December, Scraphero recorded 125 store openings and 58 store closings. More than 70% of the store closings were pharmacies—CVS with 23, Walgreens with 12, and Rite Aid with six.
Dollar General and Dollar Tree dominated in store openings in December, registering 55 and 29, respectively.
In addition to Trader Joe’s rapid expansion in December, the grocer’s website noted that a dozen more grocery stores are set to open soon. Three in California, two in Washington, and one each in Alabama, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.
AL.com, a news website in Alabama, published the full list of stores opening soon.
