Wegmans announces opening date for Manhattan, New York store

The grocery chain is on schedule with October date

Wegmans orginally said it would open a Manhattan location store in 2021, estimating the two-level, 87,500-square-foot store would be completed during the second half of 2023. The grocer is right on target, reports The New York Post

The Rochester-based grocery chain has released an opening date of Oct. 18 for the first Wegman’s location in Manhattan. Store Manager Matt Dailor said the future store’s employees have already been trained, in some cases, for over one year to get ready.

Under the terms of the 30-year lease, Wegmans said it will occupy space on both the street and lower levels of the location for a total of roughly 82,000 square feet. The building is located in the heart of Greenwich Village, surrounded by downtown residential, retail, and office locations, and occupies a full city block between 8th and 9th streets and Broadway and Fourth avenues.

A 1.2-million-square-foot landmarked building, the site is the historic Wanamaker’s department store that was transformed into offices and creative hubs for various technology and media businesses.

Customers at this new location can expect fresh sushi, sandwiches, pizza, and Mediterranean bites from the “Mezze” section. In the first half of 2024, shoppers will also have an on-site dining room with a sushi bar, as well as a Champagne and oyster bar.
