LANDOVER, Md. — The union representing workers at Safeway stores here on Tuesday held demonstrations at three sites where the retailer was to recruit and train replacement workers to be used in the event of a work stoppage.
The workers — members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 — are engaged in negotiations with Safeway and Giant-Landover on a contract to replace one that is to expire March 31.
The protests took place at three Washington-area Safeway stores where the company set up temporary hiring halls in the event of a worker strike or lockout. The Safeway employees also handed out fliers urging customers to express their support for the workers.
