Loblaw Banners Pledge Fresh Food Donations to Food Banks

TORONTO — Loblaw Cos. announced it would begin donating fresh food to local food banks affiliated with Food Banks Canada.

Real Canadian Superstore locations in Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver, as well as Atlantic Superstore locations in Halifax, have signed on to donate bakery, meat and produce items to area food banks.

"We are very excited and thrilled to be a part of this progressive approach to help meet the needs of local and provincial food banks," Peggy Hornell, senior director, Community Investment at Loblaw Cos., said in a statement.

Target Canada and Walmart Canada will also participate in Food Banks Canada’s new Retail Food Program. The organization hopes to include 1,500 stores and 400 food banks, and estimates the initiative will result in donations of hundreds of thousands of pounds of fresh, frozen and non-perishable foods.
