Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage plans to be the “Organic Month Headquarters” for customers during September, which is nationally recognized as “Organic Harvest Month.”

On Sept. 1, the first 400 customers at each Natural Grocers location will receive a free organic apple and a free reusable shopping bag.

Throughout the month, stores will offer two free classes: “Fall in Love with Organics,” which will include drawings for $50 worth of organic produce and $50 to purchase organic items in the store, “Elevate Your Tailgate,” devoted to healthy tailgating ideas.

The retailer will also host a tailgating event in Denver on Sept. 8 with free “good4u” snack kabobs and live music by Jakarta.

Hip hop artist DJ Cavem has again teamed with Natural Grocers with a song and video about choosing organic products. Customers can also download tips from DJ Cavem and Alkemia Earth on getting your family to eat more vegetables.

Other Organic Month promotions include free meal planners and recipes with ideas for including more organic vegetables in meals on a budget, and sampling of organic produce every Saturday.

“Since we added produce racks to our stores in 1989 we have sold only organically grown produce. When the USDA finally established an officially recognized and regulated Organic standard in 2000, all the produce we sold already met that standard,” Kemper Isely, Natural Grocers’ co-president, said in a press release.

“Other major grocery chains have recently begun to include organic options, but none of them sell exclusively 100% Organic Produce like we do. Our decision to sell only organic produce from the start is based upon our core founding principles of providing consumers with the highest quality product choices that are good4u, good for the environment and good for the economy. Claiming the title, ‘Organic Month Headquarters’ is our way of showcasing our commitment to organic produce and our customers.”
