NEW YORK — City officials here have approved $8 million in building and land tax abatements that will help Fairway Markets to construct a new central bakery and food-production facility in the Bronx.
In documents filed with the city’s Economic Development Corp., Fairway said the 240,000-square-foot building would allow it to efficiently centralize baking, food-preparation and produce-processing work that currently takes place at various store sites.

Fairway said it anticipated beginning operations at the new site in May after renovating the existing facility. The company also said it would relocate 132 current full-time employees to the new facility — including some workers affected by the temporary closure of a Brooklyn store that was damaged by Hurricane Sandy. It said it anticipated adding 86 new full-time workers within three years.
