CHICAGO — Willis Stein & Partners here, the parent of Roundy’s Supermarkets, would be interested in acquiring Dominick’s if Safeway decides to sell the chain, one of the co-founders of Willis Stein told Crain’s Chicago Business last week. Avy Stein also said bidders remain interested in buying Milwaukee-based Roundy’s, although the chain has been taken off the market for now. Roundy’s in February said it planned to expand into Chicago, where Dominick’s is the No. 2 chain behind Jewel. Stein could not be reached by SN for comment. British newspaper Financial Times reported earlier this month that Safeway had been approached by Willis Stein about acquiring Dominick’s, and also that Safeway was considering the sale of its Canadian division. Safeway declined to comment.
