Following a successful pilot, Meijer plans to roll out a streamlined checkout service dubbed Shop & Scan.

The supercenter retailer said Monday that Shop & Scan “dramatically decreases checkout time” by allowing customers to scan bar codes on items as they shop and then bag their groceries as they navigate the store.

The Shop & Scan service is slated to be deployed to more Meijer stores in the upcoming weeks and become available at all 235 stores by the end of this summer.

Meijer began testing Shop & Scan in November at Grand Rapids, Mich.-area stores in Standale, Rockford, Walker, Grandville and Jenison, as well as at two stores in Holland, Mich.

Shop & Scan works with Meijer's mPerks rewards program via a free app that customers can download through the Apple or Android app stores. When customer using the service finish shopping, they scan their phone at a self-checkout lane and pay.

Since the launch of the pilot, more than 12,000 customers have downloaded the app, according to Meijer.

"Shop & Scan will make the Meijer experience dramatically faster and more convenient for our customers," Chief Information Officer Terry Ledbetter said in a statement. "This technology joins our curbside pickup and home delivery programs to provide yet another option for Meijer customers to personalize their shopping experience."

Meijer’s 235 supercenters and grocery stores are located throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
