Rite Aid closing 50 more stores in Ohio and Michigan

Rite Aid is closing 50 store locations in Ohio and Michigan, according to recent filings in the retailer’s bankruptcy case. 

The company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Jersey last October, filed three court documents during the past week listing 50 locations slated for closure, including 33 in Michigan and 17 in Ohio. Earlier this month, the retailer filed documents listing more than 60 other locations slated for closure in those two states.

In June, Rite Aid filed documents listing 12 store closures in Michigan and 15 in Ohio. Shortly after that, the Detroit Free Press reported that Rite Aid workers were told that the company planned to close all of its stores in Michigan and most of its stores in Ohio.

Rite Aid also filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice last month with the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget, indicating that it planned to close its Waterford distribution center in the state, resulting in the layoffs of 191 workers.

On its website, Rite Aid lists 185 stores in Michigan and 141 stores in Ohio. It was not immediately clear how many would remain after the latest round of planned closures. A Rite Aid spokesperson could not be reached for comment about its remaining operations in those two states.

At the time of its bankruptcy filing last year, the retailer said it would initially close 154 stores and has since added hundreds of additional locations across the country to that list. The Philadelphia-based retailer went into bankruptcy with 2,111 stores. It currently has 1,591 stores still in operation, according to its website.
